17/10/05 nice site mick. is that a tele your playin' in the photo over there?
Kevy Canavan
... Cheers, kevy. It's a tele but not mine. It belongs to Declan from the 4 of Us. He took the picture. I do have a tele though, a lovely old blonde 1973.

18/10/05 Does my sis know about the lovely blonde?
Brian Hanna, Florida
... Hey, come on Brian, the guitar is older than she is. But what curves?

19/10/05 Great site Mickey - You are a very accomplished player in many instruments
Dennis Heaney
  ...

19/10/05 Hi Mickey it is with great regret i see that you have not dedicated a section of your website to 'Nose Baggin'. Before i go any further(non muso's) let me clarify 'Nose Baggin' is not some new method of taking drugs but the ancient ritual of spending all your money post gig on a chicken burger and curry chip(some say it is as old as R'n'R itself). Mickey, I will be forwarding my observation forewith to NINBOC (northern ireland nosebag board of control) they will I am sure decide on appropriate action. must dash just headin out for a snack box.Good Luck Buddy!
Joe the Coat.
... Joe, I was very dissapointed turning up at that great Indian place in Enniskillen recently only to discover it's now a Chinese. Their curry is good though. Mario's in Armagh still serve a good chicken burger and you can't beat that Chinese in Monaghan for really hot and tasty curry. Any other 'Nose Baggin' tips on where to go and where to avoid is always welcome on this board.

20/10/05 just looking to check out support band for local tour, given your name through blues gigs warrenpoint, contact:07783449242 asap
Van Morrison P.R.O
... I'm sorry Van, we don't need a support band at the minute but if we ever do I'll call you first

20/10/05 I'd like to book ya for my funeral, any chance of mates rates.... Nice 1 Mickey...
Mark McCourt
... For your funeral Mark, it really would be a pleasure

21/10/05 Good man, site looks well, put up that picture of you and Bono in the days you had hair longer than his.
Gavan Quigley
... It wouldn't do to embarass him like that

21/10/05 Cool site. who the f**k are cold porter though. Anyway, talk to u soon. im coming home next weekend. Soon i will check to see where you are playing
Gerry Morgan
  ... cheers, Gerry. Talk soon

22/10/05 Hello Micky, you dont know me saw you in London . i just wanted to know what your opinion on modalitlity in east european folk music was, you seem to play with those influences with Mc Cann tour. cheers
Clive willdabeast
... Hi Clive, I don't know what you were on that night but what you were hearing was basic major scale stuff. The 'east european folk music' usually uses minor modalities and as it is a strictly country gig I can't really find a use for that on the McCann tours.

25/10/05 wicked website. Give us a buzz if your ever in Liverpool and are looking a gig.
John Bird
  ... No problem, thanks John

25/10/05 Great site Mickey. Fair play to ye. Gig guide is a great idea. We've no excuse for not organising ourselves to come and see you. Who did the site for you? Might know someone who could do with somethings similar, not that we'd steel your ideas or anything! Cheers,
Bernie Monaghan
... Thanks Bernie, the site was built by a guy called Alan at Take Note Publishing. He was very good to work with and very helpful as I know nothing about building sites. You'll find a link to him at the bottom of this page. And yes, I expect to see you at a gig sometime soon.

25/10/05 did you ever find what you were looking for under the van in castlewellan?
Martin Gorman
... No I still haven't found what I'm looking for

28/10/05 So what sort of stuff do you actually listen to Mickey?
Johnny G.
... Hi Johnny. What I listen to changes all the time and depends on a lot of things. Kenny (our bass player) lent me a dvd last week of George Benson so I was watching that for a few days then I was listening to Stevie Ray Vaughan this week because one of my students is into him. But it's not all guitarists and just today I bought Stevie Wonder's greatest hits and it's great. I'll be listening to that for the next while. Expect some Wonder in the Cold Porter set soon.

28/10/05 Go on ye Mickey !!! All that music needs is Derk in the other room now! Good site . Can you put a video clip of you doing the somersaults whilst still playing the guitar? ;-) Go on ....
Gripper Magee
... Unfortunatley Cathal I'm not as agile as I used to be, unless you've any old footage?

29/10/05 Mickey - all the best with the site and forum - I have given a reference to it in an online web design for musicians course I am doing with Berklee Music so some of the folks over in the US doing the course may take a look and review it as part of the course.
Regards, David Millar
... Thanks for that David. Check out David's own site at :
www.davidmillarmusic.co.uk

3/11/05 well mick, got that audition i was telling you about www.beyondthedarkside.com
Kevy Canavan
... Congratulations Kevy, you deserve it. Their site is great and they sound fantastic - Pink Floyd tribute band. Can't wait to see the show although their touring schedule seems to be in Europe for the next few years.

6/11/05 Do you have the chords for Crazy little thing Called Love by Queen? email it to me if you do. please and thanks
Mark D'Arcy
... I've just e-mailed that to you Mark. Good luck with it and get back to me if you have any problems.

6/11/05 Yo! Mickey, like the site. Classy photo. Still groovin' with the Ebow. Talk soon
Declan Murphy
  ...

6/11/05 Like the website Micky, nice and clean and quick and helpful,
Pete
  ...

7/11/05 Mickey once again you add insult to injury for all those dedicated Nose Baggers out there. Had you been a 'Fully Paid up, Dyed in The Wool, Card Carrying Member you would have received on annual subsciption your copy of Egon Roney's 'A Guide To Nose Baggin In Ireland'which clearly states in the 2004 edition!!! That The 'Taj Mahal' in Enniskillen has just recently been bought over by a large Chinese Corporation called 'Yin Cow Ping'(more famous for their Global domination of the plastic fork market)and renamed it the 'Peking Palace'.Some Musicians did as a form of protest at the time opt to use the local owned 'Plentiful Panda' however this did not last and nobody cares anymore. ps your right about that Chinese in Monaghan. S**t Hot!
Joe The Coat
  ...

7/11/05 Is it true 'Mickey Murphy' is not your real name but one of those stage names? I heard your real name is Zeon Chrystal Spark. Well???.
Donna Kebab
... My secret's finally out. What can I say!!

9/11/05 Mickey i hope you can help me! Just recently my dad bought me a '68 Tele' i've no need to tell you i was over the flippin moon!! it smells a bit, especially when you switch it on and there is a few crackles and bangs when i change channels. other than that its flippin awesome mate.i read your interwebnet site you are also the proud owner of an old tele too. could you tell me mickey is it suitable for digital channels or is it outside the 'Footprint'. its a Decca Switchmatic, origionally manufactured in Huddersfield.
Duff Mc Ilwaine
... Congratulations on acquiring your '68 Tele'. I'm not familiar with the Switchmatic but it sounds like one of those fancy custom models. Does it have any colour? Personally I'm not into the whole digital thing 'cos I prefer my 'tele' twangy.

9/11/05 could you try and get fall to pieces by velvet revolver for our next lesson pleas. emma, st pauls bessbrook
... Certainly will, Emma. See you next week

10/11/05 HI MICK, HEARD YOU ONCE PLAYED ON THE SAME STAGE AS THE LEGEND DAVY LOUGHRAN, ANY TRUTH IN THIS? GOOD LUCK WITH THE SITE MICK, PURE CLASS, AND HOPE YOUR TILES ARE HERE IN TIME. RISER
That guy from Armatile
... I did once play on the same stage as the legendary Davy Loughran. Only trouble was that he played it about two weeks before me. It was the same stage though so it still counts. Doesn't it?

11/11/05 Hi Mickey I like your Website. Its great that people can now realise that there is REAL TALENT in Knockanarney. Comments of all kinds , that you can expect . especially people who know you over the years. Every success to ALL YOUR FUTURES
Tony McNulty
  ...

13/11/05 Hi mickey, they say that you're about the 5th best guitarist in Newry is this true? i am also having some trouble with learning the bass line to Fleetwood Macs Albatross, flippin heck. i think ive got the first note nailed whats the rest. Help me please.
humphrey sopha
... Correction - about the 6th best. As for Albatross - certain bass players I know stick to that one note for the whole tune so maybe you should just stick with it.

14/11/05 Hiya Mick. Are you guys playing anywhere local on New Year's Eve?
Jamie
... Cold Porter will be playing upstairs at the Balmoral Hotel in Warrenpoint. Should be a great night out and tickets are available from the the Balmoral. 'Lost Sensation' are also playing on the same bill. That's as much as I know at the minute, for more details contact the Balmoral.

14/11/05 Did you do ur trinity exams in mrs. Cronin's house? By da way it's Gary from St. Joes
... I applied through Mrs Cronin alright but the actual exams were held in Newry Arts Centre

15/11/05 i heard in your younger days you were a crosscountry champion?is there no end to your talents
Martin Gorman
... No truth in that one either. Where do you get them?

15/11/05 Don't forget all the shows you have been Musical Director for with Newpoint Players and lesser others; the music you have composed (using 'the digital thing') and the orchestras you have been leader of (Grease 44 times, JCSuperstar 98). When you're going to tell a story, tell it right! What about the times you have appeared using your stage name of 'Micket'!
Donal O'Hanlon
... That stuff is mentioned briefly on the Bands page near the bottom,Donal. I guess I really should have mentioned Newpoint Players though. And yes, the name 'Micket' has been adopted on various occasions but by Bosco Drama Group.

17/11/05 COLD PORTER TV APPEARANCE
... Cold Porter make a guest appearance on BBC2 TV next monday night 21st November at 10.00pm. It's a programme called The Visitors which is about two friends of mine Peter and Geraldine who live in a boat and spend most of their lives sailing around the world. Part of the show was filmed in Warrenpoint during this years Blues Festival where we serenaded them at the Whistledown Inn. For more on their sailing adventures visit http://sailmithril.tripod.com
Mickey

Emma, st.pauls
... No problem with Heaven's Door but I don't have a copy of Don't Cry. If you bring it in on CD (or tape) I'll show you how to play it. It's not very difficult.

25/11/05 hi mickey i love the website
jade
  ... Thanks very much Jade

29/11/05 nice site Mickey wish u much luck with ur endeavours to educate the uneducated.
Stuart Cooper
... Yo Stuart, good to hear from you

1/12/05 Dear Mickey i heard that just recently 'The S chord' had been invented by famous newry guitarist called 'Gormo' (know him?) is it true that it is the musical equivalent of 'The G Spot' can you shed any light on this?? He is after all the man that first introduced us to the combustable pick-up!!
humphrey sofa
... I gigged with 'Gormo' for a number of years and he was always renown for inventing chords. He could invent chords for any song. He always amazed me because it seemed so natural for him to invent his own chords rather than play the ones the rest of us were playing. Personally I found this technique more like the musical equivalent of migraine.
On the other hand he certainly takes full credit for the first combustible pick-up but how many know about his other innovations such as the 'self-warping' Les Paul or his King's Head Cerbocaster? Also realise that 90% of what he did was half improvised. What a guy!

1/12/05 Mickey i've just started rehearsing recently my all girl band 'With Wings'we are very pretty and we really rock man!anyway i am looking to see if you can help me i would dearly love to learn the solo in Van Halens Maxwell Jump and their other classic Corruption. can you assist. ps whats your tip for the top?
Regards Donna Kebab.
... "Woman are meant to be loved, not to be understood". --Oscar Wilde
Donna, I've sent you the parts for 'might as well'Jump and Eruption. I just hope that's what you were looking for. If you need any further help with them feel free to reply. Best of luck with the band and as for my tip for the top - the only place where results come before work is in the dictionary. Speaking of which does anyone know another word for 'Thesaurus'?

1/12/05 Hey Mickey, I was wondering if you had tabs for Until The End Of The World and Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses by U2? Thanks
Danny Carroll, Abbey.
... I don't have tabs for them Danny, but I have that album. I'll have a listen to it tonight and work it out for you. See you tomorrow.

2/12/05 Thanks a lot Mickey!
Danny Carroll
  ...

8/12/05 Have you got any easy to play christmas carols, if so could you send me them A.S.A.P, thanks
Ryan Mann
... I've just sent you a few Ryan. If there's a specific carol you're after let me know.

10/12/05 Dear Mickey, i am not sure how often people come to you and seek career advice but i need to ask for your help on this one. I work as a trainee Lawyer in a large law firm called Novak And Goode, this position will in turn lead to me being a Senior Partner within the firm. The money is flippin fantastic however i do not find the work very exciting. Just yesterday i heard a song on the radio called 'There's No Business Like Show Business'!It so inspired me that i now want to enter show business straight away. So can you confirm to me that there really is 'No Business Like Show Business' cause i plan to tender my notice on Monday. What should i do?
Yours Duff Mc Elwaine.
... Hiya Duff. Have you heard George Benson's hit 'Never Give Up On A Good Thing'? Maybe that's what you should be listening to. At the same time I can understand why a firm which claims to be Novak and Goode doesn't inspire a lot of confidence. It's not always wise to take song titles too literal either especially when you consider hits like 'If My Nose Was Running Money, Honey, I'd Blow It All On You' or the classic 'We Used To Kiss On The Lips But Now It's All Over'.

13/12/05 RGT LONDON COLLEGE OF MUSIC GRADE EXAM RESULTS WINTER 2005
... Results are just in and although I only entered two students this term they both passed with honours. Rene Temple (Newbridge Integrated College) got an incredible 100% in her Grade 3 Guitar, having achieved honours in all previous grades including 99% in her Grade 1. Tomas McConville (St.Paul's High School) got an amazing 94% in his Grade 5 Bass, having achieved 100% in his previous grade last year. I'd like to congratulate both of them for their excellent efforts and for doing me proud. Next exams will take place in April.
Mickey

15/12/05 Have a great christmas Mickey. See you in 2006
Peter C.
  ...

17/12/05 mickey would you be able to get me black rose by thin lizzy please?

19/12/05 hey mickey thanks for the tabs but it doesn't sound right when im listening to the song...is it in standard tuning?
Michael Carlisle
... I forgot to mention it on the tabs - Lizzy are tuned one semitone down on the entire Black Rose album. From low to high thats Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb and Eb.

5/1/06 BBC RADIO ULSTER APPEARANCE - SAT 7TH JANUARY
... Just got a call from the BBC to say I'm on the radio this saturday morning. It's a repeat of a show broadcast last year called Your Place And Mine. They travelled along the Newry Canal from Portadown to Newry interviewing people along the way. They spoke to me for a while and I played a few tunes in the garden here at home. Unfortunatley it's being aired at 7am on saturday morning but if that's too early for you parts of the last years broadcast can be heard at the following link. Copy link into your address bar then scroll down until you see a picture of my house. http://www.bbc.co.uk/northernireland/yourplaceandmine/topics/land/newrycanal.shtml
Mickey

6/1/06 i was looking for a gig coat could you tell me is a 10-can coat still available,i believe the legendary artic gig coat was developed by a well known derry/newry bass player.are these items on show in the rock hall of fame?can i still buy any off these,as i will be touring iceland with the mo rocks experience.
Marty Gorman
... Having already done the mo rocks gig in the past I reckon you need a good fleece because any time i gigged with him I was well fleeced, but that's another story...

8/1/06 hiya mickey, i was talking to you last night after the gig in the brass monkey. what a gig, what a band. you were excellent. when are you playing again
lee
... Thanks a lot Lee. See gig guide for details of where and when we're playing.

11/1/06 Me and Michael want to do grades but we were wondering if you would be able to get us two entry forms along with the book? And what price is the book anyway?
Darren Carlisle
... I've just spoken to someone at the Registry on your behalf. When you order the book let them know that you are brothers doing the same exam and they will send you a second entry form. The Grade 1 electric guitar handbook is £8.49. You would need to order it as soon as possible because the closing date for exam entries is in about 2 weeks.

18/1/06 Hey Mickey, I was wondering if you had the tabs for Angel of Harlem by U2 or Behind Blue Eyes by The Who?Thanks
Danny.
... Don't have tabs for either but I have Angel of Harlem on CD and it's quite easy to play, I'll show you on friday. I've played the Limp Bizkit version of the other one in the past but I don't know if it's the same. If you have a copy of The Who version bring it with you.

18/1/06 hey mick. i'm just trying to organize my return flights for the italy tour. i was thinking of not getting of at England but heading back to Ireland with you guys. give me a phone and let me know your italy to stanstead flight details. CHEERS

Vicki Mohan
... Sorry Vicki, I don't know it at all but if you can get me a copy I'll work it out for you.

29/1/06 hey mickey nice site, jus messaging ya 2 ask 4 any addresses of gud guitar shops in new york that u know of, thanks v.much
Conor McCormack
... 48th Street, Manhattan is a must see. Allow plenty of time as you could spend all day in it. Sam Ash and Rudy's are among the bigger stores but the best is probably Manny's Music. Everyone has shopped there - Clapton, Hendrix, Satriani, Cobain etc. The downside of this is that 48th street can be quite pricey. There are no real bargains. I found a shop called 30th Street Guitars on - you've guessed it - 30th street, which didn't have the same massive selection as the bigger stores but was a lot more affordable. That's where I bought my electric sitar brand new for a few hundred dollars. They're not available here at all though I did see a second hand one for sale a few years ago in Denmark St (London) for £800.
If you get a chance go see Les Paul. He's at the Iridium (51st street) every monday night.

29/1/06 love the site. still set for saturday in da duke? me ma was lookin deckys number but she doesn't know urs
Danny O'Hanlon
  ...

10/2/06 Hey Mickey. Would you have tabs/chords for Stand By Me (Ben E King), C'Mon Everybody (Eddie Cochrane) or Dreaming of You (The Coral)? Any chance you could send them to me? Thanks a lot.
Danny Carroll
... Hi Danny. I'm in Italy right now but I'll be back tomorrow and try and get some of those to you.

13/2/06 Hi Mickey Niamh here just wondering would you be able to bring in the tabs for DEAR JOHN by STATUS QUO thanks lots

7/4/06 catch yourself on
... This site was designed for friends and students of mine as well as people interested in booking me or my band. You obviously don't fit into any of these catogories and since you hadn't the balls to leave your own name your comment loses any worth it may have otherwise had.

7/4/06 hey Mickey. just leaving this link for you like I said i would. The video is on the right hand side of the page. hopefully we can get a longer one up. the site is http://www.myspace.com/sereneband
Mark D'Arcy

12/4/06 Hi Micket, Just stumbled on your site. Looks great with lots of contacts. Congratulations! Hope to see you soon and that you are available for the Bosco in November. Good Luck!
Jim McGuigan
... Thanks Jim, good to hear from you. Let me know the dates as soon as you have them. Oh and by the way - what show are we doing?

14/4/06 Hi Mickey. Is your gig in the Duke on Easter Saturday an afternoon one or a night one?
Jerome Burns
... Hi Jerome, it's a night one. First band will kick off around 10pm, we'll go on somewhere between 10.30 and 11pm. Hope to see you there.

15/4/06 hey Mickey, was at the Big Glenn Gig recently - what a night! Cold Porter was never so hot. Seriously though, it was a great night and i hope you make it back there somtime in the future to play for an even bigger crowd.
Cissy
  ...

Aisling McEvoy
... Thanks a lot Aisling, glad you enjoyed it. We're back tonight again if you're up for it. Otherwise keep an eye on the gig guide if you want to see us again.

Gareth
... Thanks Gareth, I'll give you a ring about sat nite re set list.

4/5/06 Mickey, is it true that Van Morrison has requested you to busk outside his gig in Warrenpoint Hall? Rumour has it that you've got the shades and black hat ordered in McCartans!

A few small updates have just been added to my 'bands' page. There is now links to a radio show I did for the BBC last year and a link to the Cold Porter myspace page. Also, the audio clip has been replaced with a video clip. I hope to add a few other things soon but am expecting a new arrival in a few weeks so I could be quite busy. 7/1/07 hey mickey, i got an epiphone sg an i was wonderin if u cud give me a link 2 any good sites that could take me step by step through lowering the action?
Michael Carlisle
... The action on the Epiphone SG is usually set up pretty well and if it isn't the shop who sold it will set it up for you at no extra cost if you ask them. If on the other hand it was bought second hand or online, don't worry, it's quite simple to do yourself.
The SG has a Tune-o-Matic bridge which means that unlike most electrics you can't set the action on each string individually. Instead there are two washers under the bridge which you screw downwards to lower the action. Adjust the bass side first then the treble. Adjust only a little at a time, retuning as you go along. You can only go down so far before strings will start to buzz and bending becomes impossible. When you reach this point raise the action a little until you reach the lowest point possible without fretbuzz or bends 'choking'.

14/1/07 hey mickey would you be able to get me july by mundy thanx
Niamh O'Reilly
... I'll try and get it by wednesday

4/7/07 Dear Mickey I do hope you can help me. Recently while touring in Russia (formerly part of the USSR) with my band I met and fell in love with a young Russian lady called Tattianna. The relationship was sort of difficult to begin with as I couldn't speak Russian and most nights she couldn't speak at all! We had great fun all the same drinking whiskey, smoking cigars and arm wrestling into the early hours. As you can probably guess by now I have become very attached to her, 'so what is your problem'? I hear you say. Well recently she has written to me and said she wants me to go back to Russia to meet her family and if that goes well shortly afterwards she will be willing to show me her Large Balalaika's. Whilst I am very flattered I am not sure that I am ready to take this relationship to that level, please help! Yours always in difficulty....Duff.
